Unemployment Benefits for the Self-Employed: You’re Out of Luck

One of the downsides of being self-employed is that you often do not get many of the benefits that traditionally employed workers enjoy. And one of those benefits is unemployment benefits.

As news of the economy continues to affect many of us, concerns about home business income are mounting. While I haven't had a hard time yet, I do worry about what happens as my clients begin to feel the pinch. And, of course, I wonder about this: What if I can't get new clients?

Unfortunately, those of us who are self-employed do not have a way to supplement our income while we search for more work. Unemployment benefits are not paid out to the self-employed — even if you can take in your tax returns and show how much you have been making.

Actually, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania have Self-Employment Assistance programs in addition to Unemployment Assistance programs. The United States Department of Labor has more information at the following link:

Thanks for sharing! This is great information — nice that some states recognize that the self-employed may need some help!

This is not of any use to the currently self-employed. This is really to help the unemployed become self-employed. If you read the details, it only applies to the same people who already qualify or unemployment.

Oh yes, we are the backbone of the American economy.
And Washington is standing on our backbone to hand off monies to people who don't want to work and companies that don't know how to manage it.

My husband was self employed. Almost 2 years unemployed now. I pay our first mortgage, 2nd mortgage is 4 months behind. We are in debt of $250,000. Is there no help at all for previous self employed….
